Tyvek®: Air Bag Covers that ProtectAir bag covers made of Tyvek® brand materials protect passenger air bags from dust and punctures which could hinder its performance. The cover serves as a sleeve to properly contain the air bag in its folded position and is tamper-evident. While in inventory, the cover protects the air bag from dirt, dust and possible damage. Once the air bag is installed in the vehicle, the Tyvek® acts as a vibration cover to protect the nylon air bag from damage, which could be caused by rubbing while the vehicle is in motion. Since Tyvek® has a smooth, slick surface, the nylon air bag will not wear if road bumps cause friction against the cover. The air bag cover features perforated tear seams which open in a controlled manner when the bag deploys. In order to consistently meet Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 302 for flame retardancy, a coating is applied to the Tyvek® before it is die-cut and perforated. Modified versions of Tyvek® 1056D and 1073D are used for this application in order to provide a longer oxidative life.
